SIJ: Special Immigrant Juveniles
Everyday, children find themselves tangled in government redtape. These children often flee their countries after being abused, abandoned or neglected by their parents. While horrific as it may seem, the immigration law has a provision to protect these children so that they find a safe haven in the U.S. That provision is called Special Immigrant Juvenile status which gives them a green card and they can eventually apply for citizenship. It is important to note that this provision precludes the children from ever petitioning their parents.
